Chill your rocks glass if you prefer, and fill a mixing glass with plenty of ice.
Measure 45 ml bourbon (or rye), 30 ml Campari and 30 ml sweet vermouth into the mixing glass.
Stir gently with a bar spoon for 25–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.
Place a large ice cube in the rocks glass.
Strain the chilled mixture over the ice cube.
Express an orange twist over the surface to release oils, rub it on the rim if desired, and drop it in.
Serve and enjoy the bitter-sweet, whiskey-forward profile.
